Farm Animal Welfare Leadership Award

*NEW* The Farm Animal Welfare Leadership Award, presented by Animal Health Canada. Recipients of this award have demonstrated a commitment to farmed animal welfare either through 1) the development of an innovative process or product, 2) outreach or communications activities, or 3) a proven commitment to animal welfare by incorporating best practices into the core of their day-to-day work, business, or organization. Through their work in Canadian animal agriculture, the recipients of this award promote high standards in farmed animal care and work collaboratively to build trust both within Canadian animal agriculture and beyond.

  • This award is open to individuals involved in both government and non-government organizations.
  • Nominations may be made by individuals, governments or organizations and must be
    • made before the deadline included in the call for nominations, and
    • using the accompanying application form.

Criteria

Innovation

Creation or development of a new process, product or source of knowledge which improves animal welfare through the identification of practical tools and practices to improve handling and care practices. Demonstration of this can be through:

  • Applied research
  • New product development
  • Mechanism to share information and promote best practice adoption

Outreach or Communication

Taking an active role to promote and share factual information about animal welfare standards and practices to improve animal welfare in Canada within the farmed animal sector. This can be met by:

  • Supporting program and training development and delivery to promote knowledge transfer
  • Extensive collaboration efforts at the regional, national, or international level
  • Actively seeking out stories to share with the agricultural community and the public about innovative animal care and how it can be applied elsewhere to promote awareness

Outstanding Commitment

For this award, this can be shown by:

  • A career long dedication to animal agriculture industry and animal welfare which extends beyond just working in the industry or government and includes voluntary work
  • Efforts to set the standards higher when is comes to animal welfare
  • Demonstration of exceptional compassion or foresight for animal welfare in their activities
